Feasibility Study

Renewable energy procurement for buyers in Czechia

March 2, 2023

This Study was developed by Think RE GmbH for investigating the structure of the renewable energy market in Czech Republic and to investigate economically feasible contractual solutions to decarbonize the corporate Scope 2 footprint. Therefore, the document is divided in four chapters without registers and appendix. In Chap. 1, the Czech electricity market is described with regards to market design, major players, regulatory framework, and the Czech decarbonization strategy. Chap. 2 deals with the pricing in the Czech power market. This chapter gives an overview of current electricity prices and expected future developments. Chap. 3 covers the guarantee of origin scheme in Czech Republic. The focus here is to describe the issuance, transfer, and the cancellation of guarantees of origin to document the corporate decarbonization progress. Chap. 4 covers power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Czech Republic as an alternative contract type to the existing standard utility products. This chapter focuses on on-site solar energy as the most appropriate solution in the current market environment to decarbonize electricity consumption in the Czech Republic.
